This hunt cap is adorned in the rear with Lock's famous "double bow"
Brown felt riding hat with visor, bearing the label of Lock and Company, the preeminent London hatters who had exported to America since 1781.
In the American style it is worn "tails up," meaning that the tails of the grosgrain ribbon bow do not dip below the line of the hat; in Britain they hang down.
This shape is named "Quorn" after the famous hunt in Leicestershire, England. This form was derived from the eighteenth-century jockey cap, which was matched to the racing colors of the horse's owner. Black velvet examples were recorded in 1774 as part of a Quaker hunt uniform adopted by Philadelphia's Gloucester hunt.
The shape evolved into its present "hard hat" to protect against head injuries.
